Mental Health: Searching for the Right Therapist

By | August 17, 2018

One of the most important factors is comfort – important to make sure an individual is comfortable with their therapist. Much like teachers, there are no bad therapists, just the wrong one for one particular individual.

Upon determining that one needs to see a therapist, it is imperative to find a therapist that fits an individual’s needs. It usually takes a few attempts before one might find a counselor who works best for them. One of the most important factors is comfort – important to make sure an individual is comfortable with their therapist. Much like teachers, there are no bad therapists, just the wrong one for one particular individual.

While it might not sound crucial to have a suitable therapist, the consequences could be devastating: as seen in the recent tv hit show, 13 Reasons Why, going to see a therapist was a last-ditch effort prior to the protagonist ending her life. Unfortunately, the therapist did not manage to connect with her.

A great way to decide on a therapist is through research. For example, asking others about their therapy experiences and therapists would be a good way to gain insight on therapists in their area and what they should expect. When people are looking into buying a new product or using a new service, they often read online reviews or ask their family, friends and people they trust the most for their thoughts. Asking around and learning from other’s one on one experiences can be the same with therapy. Whether one asks about the clinic itself or the therapists that work in the clinic, it’s important to learn ask much as they can before deciding on a therapist.

Another way to conduct at-home research is to look up area clinics and review their online directory. The directory will provide information about the therapists available. The directory page should have a profile of every therapist and each of the services they offer. Many therapists offer an array of services and specialize in certain areas. For example, some therapists may specialize in behavior disorders or special needs in children while others may specialize in mental illness with clients that have depression and anxiety. Many factors go into deciding what services are most necessary for the client and which therapist and clinic would be the best for them.

For some clients, the gender orientation of the therapist plays a role in the services. Although both genders are given the same tools and education to provide professional counseling services, certain clients might have a predisposition to feel more comfortable with a particular sex. Previous traumatic experiences with certain genders make it important for people to research which therapists are available to them. Females that may have had a previous male abusive partner may be reluctant or hesitant to seek a male therapist’s counseling services. This is applicable both ways – males might feel intimidated by a certain gender, too.

Places like Naya Clinics offers both male and female therapy and counseling providers. They also give information on each counselor available to the public. Aside from online research, many clinics are available to give out some information over the phone. It could be beneficial to call and enquire about their services or ask any questions one may have.

The final step in deciding whether a therapist is suitable for a certain individual is to see the therapist and decide from there, bearing in mind that it is always okay to walk away after a few sessions to seek a therapist whom might be a better fit for you.
