The Complete Soundtrack to HBO’s Lovecraft Country

By | August 17, 2020
  • HBO’s Lovecraft Country is now airing, and in addition to the show’s thrilling horror, it’s also got a soundtrack filled with jams.
  • The music ranges from era-appropriate songs (the show is set in the 1950s) to pop jams of our present.
  • Here’s every song from the Lovecraft Country Season 1 soundtrack so far. We’ll be updating this story after each new episode.

Part of the fun of the Lovecraft Country soundtrack is there’s no hard and fast rule for what you’re going to get. Just in the first episode alone, there’s a score (Herschel Burke Gilbert’s theme from The Jackie Robinson Story), a cl0se-to-era-appropriate song from Etta James, a modern hip-hop banger from Tierra Whack, a spoken-word selection from a James Baldwin debate, and even diegetic music, as sisters Ruby and Letitia Lewis (played by Wunmi Mosaku and Jurnee Smollett) lead some soul-filled live performances to a small-but-adoring crowd.

And a soundtrack with that much variety feels like the perfect fit for Lovecraft Country, HBO’s show that refuses to fit into any one genre box. Based on Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, The show primarily comes from a horror angle, but also works as a timely piece of historical fiction, with dashes of fantasy, thriller, sci-fi, and even comedy thrown in for good measure.

In addition to the songs you’ll find below, the show also features an original score created by award-winning composers Laura Karpman and Raphael Saadiq. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the score the two put together was performed and recorded by The Unison Orchestra, who are a remote online orchestra made up of members of other major international orchestras. Karpman previously worked with Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green as the composer for her last show, Underground, and Saadiq is an HBO veteran, working as the music supervisor for the premium cable network’s hit comedy series Insecure. The Lovecraft Country original score will likely be released on Spotify at a certain point.
