A Miami-based provider organization plans to increase its use of analytics technology from Health Catalyst to facilitate appropriate payment for services and better understand the costs of care.
Nicklaus Children’s Health System, a major pediatric care delivery system in Miami, has chosen the cloud-based Data Operating System of Health Catalyst to boost its analytics efforts. The flagship 309-bed Nicklaus Children’s Hospital anchors a network of outpatient centers across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Facing increasing margin pressures, the organization looked for a vendor to help trend and benchmark financial data to identify areas needing improvement, says Ed Martinez, CIO at Nicklaus Children’s. “We chose Health Catalyst as our partner because of its track record of outcomes improvement and its ability to match up technology with improvement services,” Martinez adds.
Consequently, the Data Operating System will be the hospital’s digital analytics backbone, with a platform that can integrate data from more than 200 data sources. Machine learning and natural language processing technologies are also part of the package.

Other new contracts include:
- VITAS Healthcare, a provider of end-of-life care, will use cloud applications from Oracle to better anticipate frequently changing workforce needs and support career success for its 12,000 employees. The organization operates 47 hospice locations in 14 states and Washington, DC. Expected benefits include coordinated wage and compensation oversight, improved productivity and cost controls, higher human resource effectiveness, and better communication workflow.
- Pella (Iowa) Regional Health Center has contracted with Sisu Healthcare IT solutions for improved Service Desk support. Go-live is expected in early February, with staff members anticipating an improved ticket management system that that enables users to easily submit requests and check the status of requests via a self-service portal.
- Health insurer Molina Healthcare will receive data-driven insights using an analytics platform from Inovalon. Molina is coming back for more as it worked with the vendor in 2017 for similar work on its health plans in Florida and Texas. Now, the new contract expands the relationship to include additional Molina states and all lines of business across the enterprise. Improved efficiencies are expected to be realized immediately.
- The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched “telehealth lifestyle coaching” services for eligible veterans receiving care from the VA at 20 medical centers and outpatient clinics. The virtual coaching will focus on helping veterans maintain a healthy diet, increase physical activity, manage weight and stress and limit alcohol use.
