After Two Seasons, Who Killed Sara? Fans Are Convinced Sara Is Actually Alive

By | May 26, 2021

Spoilers ahead for Who Killed Sara? Season Two.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in this modern world of ours, but here’s one thing I know for sure: years from now, we’ll still be asking who killed Sara. It is, quite simply, the mystery of our time. Over 55 million Netflix users tuned into the first season of Who Killed Sara?, making it the biggest non-English language show Netflix has ever had. The second season premiered on May 19, and fans hoped we’d finally have the answer to the titular question, the puzzle that fuels the show. There have been plenty of suspects over the course of the show’s 18 episodes: Mariana, Elroy, Cesar, Chema, Marifer. The list goes on. At this point, the question truly is: who didn’t kill Sara? It seems like every character, at one point or another, had a reason to want Sara dead all those years ago when she fell to her death while parasailing.

Or did she?! This is the biggest question on fans’ minds: could Sara still be alive? And, reader, I personally believe that she very well could be. Sure, it’s called Who Killed Sara?, but if audiences have learned anything from the show’s twists and turns, outrageous subplots, and jaw-dropping surprises, it’s that nothing is off-limits. Anything can happen, and that’s what makes Who Killed Sara? so much fun to watch, if you let yourself go fully along for the ride. That said, fans really want to know who killed Sara, and if she’s even actually dead. The cast can’t even tell you: Carolina Miranda (who plays Elisa Lazcano) recently revealed that her friends and family have a bet going about who truly killed Sara, but Miranda remains tight-lipped. Below I’ve rounded up some of the most intriguing fan theories floating around the internet and my own speculation on the evidence for each.

Theory #1: Alex killed Sara.

Further Speculation: In the flashbacks, teenage Alex seemed to be completely oblivious to what was going on in his own house. He doesn’t know that Sara was struggling with the knowledge about her biological father as well as her mental health. He doesn’t know that she gets into drug dealing with Nicandro. And I guess that night when Abel escaped, tried to kill Sara, wrecked the house, and was killed by Cesar and buried in the backyard, Alex was just at the gym for a super long time and Sara did an impeccable job cleaning up while traumatized? Are we to believe that Alex could be so unaware, so naive? Or could the flashbacks we’ve seen be tailored to show only the good side of Alex, the perfect brother?

Theory #2: Nicandro, his family, and the doctor killed Sara.

Further Speculation: At the end of the Season Two finale, we see Nicandro looking through files on Sara and her doctor. He’s on the phone with the doctor, and he reveals that Alex thinks Marifer killed Sara by cutting the parasail ropes, and he can never find out that it was really Nicandro and the doctor who killed her. If you recall, Nicandro had reasons to want Sara dead. For one, she called his parents and told them that he was using and dealing drugs. But the connection between Nicandro and the doctor is unclear, as is the timeline. Earlier, we see a flashback of Sara undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (which, as disturbing as it sounds, was still used in the early 2000s when Sara was a teenager, and is still used in some situations today). Maybe Nicandro purposefully gave Sara drugs that would exacerbate her pre-existing mental health conditions, and then put her in treatment with a corrupt doctor to silence her? Maybe his drug-dealing was much bigger than just him, and maybe his wealthy parents are involved? Could this be yet another scenario where Sara got in over her head, and paid for it with her life? Possibly.

Theory #3: Sara is alive.

Further Speculation: We never see Sara’s body at the hospital. Some people have debated whether you can really die from a parasailing fall (you can). Maybe Sara was alive at the hospital, and escaped. She could be in hiding somewhere and reveal herself soon. Maybe she wanted Alex in prison because he wasn’t the perfect brother he seemed to be. Or perhaps, Nicandro’s family kidnapped her to do experiments on her for the “Medusa project,” and she escaped.

Do you think any of these could be right? Hopefully, we’ll find out when Netflix officially confirms a Who Killed Sara? Season Three. Until then, it’s back to the conspiracy board.
