Pop star Sam Smith has just announced that their pronouns are they/them. In an Instagram post posted earlier today, Smith explained how the decision to change their pronouns are the culmination of their path towards self-acceptance.
“Ive decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out,” they wrote. “I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it!”
Smith also added that while they knew that people would accidentally misgender them, all they ask for that “you please please try.”
Smith then went on to tag non-binary and trans activists that have given them “so much clarity and understanding.”
The singer-songwriter first announced that they were non-binary and genderqueer in March 2019, during an appearance on Jameela Jamil’s Instagram series I Weigh. “You are a mixture of all different things, you are your own special creation,” Smith said. “That’s how I take it; I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.”
