Growing older is a part of the cycle of life and you should be happy to begin this new chapter of your life. You have worked your entire life and now you are finally free to do the things you want – age is just a number and keeping your spirits high can mean having the best time of your life in your senior years.
Stress can be the cause of a lot of health problems. It is true that you cannot completely eliminate stress from your life, however, once you reach your senior years it is of crucial importance to try and reduce it as much as you can.
Once you are in your senior years, at least you don’t have to worry about the work stress you have been experiencing throughout your entire life. Now it is the time to embrace your free time and engage in stress-reducing activities which can ultimately improve your lifestyle. Activities such as meditation or walking in the park can be a real de-stress therapy.
A quick exercise you can do is write down the things that cause you the most stress in your life. Once you become aware of them it will become easier to address them. Start with the ones that seem easier to overcome and build your way up.
Do Moderate Physical Activity
If you are in a good physical state that allows you to be moderately active, then it is one thing you should definitely go for. Moderate physical activity such as swimming, cycling, aerobic and even light gym exercise can be beneficial for keeping the bone density at an optimal level even in your senior years. Physical activity is important for the bones, muscles and also for your metabolism and the overall health.
Still, be very careful not to overdo it. Once you are over 60, your body will take significantly more time to recover. Avoid weight training and intensive cardio exercise.
Traveling might be something that you have never been able to do to the extent you wanted to just because you had too many things you needed to take care of. Now it is time to do it!
Exploring the world is going to give you a new outlook on life. Regardless if it is alone, with a partner, with family or with friends, traveling nowadays is an easy thing to do. Luckily, even if you are bad at planning a trip there are agencies that will sort everything out for you.
Take Care of Your Metabolism
The metabolism slows down as we age by as much as 5% every decade. That’s why it is common for people to put weight on as they age, yet that doesn’t need to be the case.
The speed of your metabolism depends also on the things you eat. The key for a faster metabolism is fiber and a lot of water. Water is clearly beneficial for all body functions so make sure you are drinking enough of it. Another thing to remember is that as we age, some people might experience a deficit in B12 vitamin which can also be a cause of slow metabolism and reflux. Speak to your doctor and see if you need to take a supplement.
Use Government Support
The government has introduced medical programs to support senior citizens who suffer from specific conditions and diseases. All states have their long-term care systems for citizens over the age of 65.
There are certain conditions that a person needs to meet to qualify for the program, such as the type of disease, their financial situation and their settlement status. It might be worth checking if you qualify for the program and get legal help to give yourself the best chance of being approved.
Improve Your Sex Life
Sex is an important part of life starting from the moment you reach sexual maturity until your senior years. A lot of people start having sex less and less as they are getting older, yet that is a completely wrong approach. Sex can be beneficial for a lot of reasons, anything from making your skin look better, your heart stronger and your mood more elevated.
Sex can be very beneficial in your senior days and can be better than ever. Still, few modifications might be needed for a pleasurable experience. Erectile dysfunctions become more frequent after hitting 60 so lifestyle does matter – eating healthy, being active and not smoking are the most beneficial things for a better sex life for men in their senior years. For women, vaginal dryness can become an issue. Luckily, it can be easily solved by lubricants.
Do Mental Exercise
Keeping your brain sharp is important. In your 60s, your brain still has the capacity to learn new things which is the reason why mental exercise is highly advisable. As we are growing older, our mental capabilities decrease yet there is a way to slow down the process. The biggest problem is accessing memories, which is why we often associate getting older with memory loss.
Engaging in activities such as reading, crossword puzzles and language learning can significantly improve the memory and mental capabilities and delay any possible diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Plus, such activities can strengthen the neurological connections and enable you to stay sharp for longer.
Reaching your 60s is a wonderful thing, same as with any other decade of your life. Living life to the fullest is not an option – it’s a must. Embrace the possibilities that this new decade brings and enjoy!
